Ryan and I had Emily's midyear conference with her teacher today, and it was absolutely the best conversation we've ever had with a teacher. I hope you'll forgive some gushing, but I want to share it with you just because I'm so grateful to Danielle. Em is improving in virtually every area, and it's absolutely wonderful to see. Em's teacher has been doing monthly DRAs to help track Em's progress, since long plateaus have been a problem for her in the past. Since she started tutoring with Danielle, Em has gone up a reading level every single month, from a level 10 in September to a level 18 yesterday. It took the whole of first grade for Emily to go from a level 4 to a level 8, and this included extra support at school and twice weekly tutoring after school for the second semester - this steady improvement is an incredible change from what we've seen in the past. Em seems to have genuine strategies now to approach unfamiliar words. Before working with Danielle, she didn't really seem to understand that words break down into syllables, but now she uses a swooping technique when she gets stuck and it really helps her. Em's teacher also said she's a far more confident writer and speller than she was at the beginning of the year. Emily is making sustained progress, and it feels magical to us. I'm giving Danielle all of the credit!
Emily worked twice a week with a tutor recommended by her school from January to August of 2023. I'm sure she's a good tutor; she is a former elementary school teacher with her degree in reading instruction, so not just a college student or anything. We were a bit hesitant to make the change to La Jolla Learning because Em liked her tutor, but we also felt she needed more help than she was getting. Seeing how much Danielle has helped her, we feel like this is one of the best decisions we've made for Emily. I feel like Em has a specialist now who knows how to help reading click for her. I also feel like Danielle really cares about Em, and I'm sure you know how important that is as a mom. We're just really grateful, so I wanted to be sure to share our experience with you too. We're really impressed with the quality of support Em is getting, and we couldn't be happier. Thank you so much!!
