Reading Comprehension Support

Our Programs

Helping Students Succeed in Reading

Reading becomes more complex and challenging as students progress through school. Beginning around 3rd grade, students are expected to read to learn, as opposed to learning how to read. As expectations for reading and listening comprehension intensify, some students are left feeling lost and overwhelmed because they haven’t been taught strategies to help them process information effectively. They may be stronger in visual or spatial reasoning and need individualized support to succeed with language-based instruction. Sometimes students need practice with strategies like annotating text and periodically summarizing, and other times they need more intensive reading support to help them with the more fundamental aspects of reading comprehension, both of which we can do!

How La Jolla Learning Supports Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is an essential academic and life skill, and at La Jolla Learning, we pride ourselves on providing students with intentional strategies to support their reading comprehension while also engaging them in the process. We help students visualize what they read and bring texts to life through dynamic discussions and activities and texts based on their interests. We support students who need reading comprehension interventions as well as students who just need support in strengthening their understanding of the material they are reading in school. Whatever reading support your child needs, our instructors are prepared to dive in and help them develop tools and strategies that will help them in the classroom and beyond.

Reading Comprehension Support

Students struggling with reading comprehension often have weak concept imagery, meaning they have difficulty in creating a picture based on what they read. We offer lessons that help students strengthen their ability to picture what they read, and summarize and infer based on the information they received. We also offer generalized academic support to assist students in comprehending the texts they read in class.

Customized Learning Plans

La Jolla Learning creates individual learning plans for all students. We take into account previous educational experience and interventions, personality, academic strengths, and skills to support. Our administrative team regularly collaborates with instructors to ensure that learning plan goals are being met.

Assessments

La Jolla Learning offers a few different assessments to ascertain students’ areas of need and learning style. Our MindPrint assessment will ascertain what type of reasoning skills your student is thriving in, and what reasoning skills need support. Instructors adapt their teaching methods to suit the learning strengths of your student to help them become successful readers!
